Would you attend a symfony training course in the UK?

by catchamonkey » Wed Jun 17, 2009 8:02 pm

I appreciate this isn't relevant for those that attend the France/USA courses, but I wanted to get a level of interest to see if a UK course would be possible.
Jonathan Wage indicated a cost of approx $1400 per candidate just to give you an idea.

thanks

Chris

(maybe a mod could sticky this or promote it somehow if appropriate?)

Hey,

Unfortunately for me it's just too expensive. Although I'm sure it's good value for money and it would be ace to learn from Jwage.

How about organising a more chilled meetup maybe where some of us can prepare some short tuts.

I'd certainly be interested, depends where in the UK I guess, though i'm prepared to travel and stay if neccasary. Also depends on my work load at the time, but i'd give it priority.

It depends on the level for me.

If it's an introduction course, then no - but if it's an intermediate/advanced course that get straight in to the nitty-gritty then maybe we could get a contingent to come over.

We'd love to have such a course in Norway but there just aren't enough of us to make it worthwhile, so hopping over to the UK is the next best thing...

By the way, I believe it's a 3 day course which means the $1400 isn't that bad at all.

I'd agree with Russ, it would depend on the level. We've been using Symfony for a couple of years but it would be more useful for some of my team to attend a course looking at intermediate/advanced topics. In particular we need to start considering upgrade from 1.0 for two pretty large and complex websites.

At today's rates that's ~850GBP in the UK.

I would certainly consider it if it was at an intermediate/advanced level. I've fallen behind on symfony 1.2 and rapid development techniques - still using 1.0 and generally quite happy with it!

(Edit - I'd love to see how to develop forms in 1.2 rapidly - I gave it a go on a demo project and it really slowed me down. I wonder if I missed something, or whether it is just a case of getting used to it?)

Pretty much the same here, i've done a couple of dozen 1.0 sites, tried to move to 1.2 doctrine, but the learning curve doesnt fit in with the time availiable so we end up having to use 1.0 to make sure we get it done.

so one more for intermediate/advanced.

This poll probably needs some more options... I certainly can't answer with either of the choices there now.

I think location is pretty much a given, but the type of course is far more important.

No worries,
I will add a few more options to it, thanks for the input.
@iamdecal, I'm in the same boat really and just my own time/freelance time to learn and build with 1.2 but I really want to get moving a lot faster and make sure I'm doing things the right way.

I think the price is very reasonable for what the course offers.

im sorry, i didnt mean, that the price is too high for the course.

How many do we need for the course? I assume there is a max number of places, and a minimum number to make it financially viable. If we can get somewhere between those two numbers to commit on here things can start moving forward with room for a couple to drop out without having to cancel.

I havent checked which products are on the market, i just know i have to start using some of it, i only heard about Symfony and Zend.

I am creating some small webpages, and some more advanced. Someone says, that Joomla is fine for small pages, but for bigger products Symfony is better. I can understand this to a certain point, but would be nice to get some more detailed information about this.

I use symfony for all the sites I create, some very small, basic 4 page sites, others are national sites with many hits and users. Some may say it's overkill to use symfony on a small site, but I just love the flexibility and power it gives me when it comes to updates and maintenance.

Hi Guys,

As a company we would be interested in a UK based course.

We have 2/3 people who would be suitable for an intermediate course, introductions can be done internally using Jobeet.

Myself and another developer would be interested in an advanced course, especially the new stuff within symfony 1.2. Forms, filters etc. A doctrine slant would be preferable especially as that is going to be the default ORM from 1.3

I know that Jon's time and travel would be expensive but the costs seem rather high.

Especially for an advanced level course, which I would think would only be a day.

I would have thought £300 a day per head would be a reasonable cost? But I've never paid for tech training before so I don't have a comparison.

Cheers

Hi John,

The cost quoted is based on the current course being run, which I believe is a 3 day course.
I'm unsure of the possibility or viability of a 1 day course in the UK due to travel etc, but it could be worth finding out from Jon.

Doctrine would certainly be the ORM to cover in my eyes, I think it would be useful to clarify the levels we speak of at Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced too.

Okay, to confirm

were looking for 8-10 ten people
we want an intermediate to expert level course,
the cost is about US$1400 (approx GB£850) + travel to somewhere in uk + accommodation

based on that, I'm in.

Can we have anyone else that can make an early comment about committing?
Gives us a better idea of how well this is going to work.

thanks

I would definitely be interested in a UK course.

I was looking at the 22/7 course in France, but unfortunately my French only stretches to ordering bread, coffee and beer.

I'd like to see a course over here asap. How do we make this happen?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but if i dont ask it, i will not learn:

Why not offer the course for around 150 GBP and get 100 participants, instead of the normal price and have 8 participants ?

In my mind, that would be the right strategy, if you want Symfony to grow and grow.

Hi Peturkirke,

You can certainly give your participants a much higher quality course if there are fewer of them, if you try to teach the same course to 100 people rather than just 8 you will generally find that not all of them leave with the knowledge they had hoped for and therefore don't get value for money, even at a much reduced rate.

Just my opinion.

As someone who has delivered IT training, even with highly motivated learners, any more than 10 or 12 becomes more about crowd control than teaching, as everybody is moving at a different pace.

8-10 learners sounds good to me.

How soon can this happen?

I would be very interested in attending and would imagine my employers would potentially want to send up to 8 people depending on the level / cost / location.

We are based in the North West of England.

The numbers are starting to rise now, so what's the next step?

I'm more than happy to sort out a venue and nearby hotels etc, I'm based in Bristol, so although not central, its got good transport links, and is cheaper than London.

Where have we got to with this? Has it happened yet?

I'm certainly interested...

I'm based in London, but could do Oxford. As it's now term time and the students are back again, I could organise somewhere cheap in the midlands, around the Warwick area.

Just to give this thread a bit of life. I would be VERY interested in UK based online or class based training. The quicker I can code in symphony, the quicker I can complete my projects and increase my profit.

Just wondering if there has been any movement on this? Am not clear whether I would lobby my employer for funding, or whether I would pay for it myself - so this generally depends on costs.

yup still interested, though now I guess the goal posts have changed slightly... looking back up the thread, we were looking at 1.2 training, now it would either be 1.4 - which some of us might consider to be a bit redundant given the 2.0 is on the way. OR 2.0 training, which again some of us may not want to do having invested a lot of time in 1.x

That said - i'm probably up for either, I'll have a lot of 1.0 and 1.4 sites to support and extend, and wont move to 2.0 for new sites until I'm happy that I can develop well with it (to which end a training course would obviously help)

In summary - i'm still keen and I don't mind so much if its 1.4 or 2.0, but would probably prefer 2.0 as that will give me a better long term return in my investment.
