which ide/editor do you use working on symfony projects?

Maybe we can push for some specific Symfony support for some of the editors?

I alternate between PHPEclipse and jEdit. Since the latter is not there, I'll vote for the former!

gEdit, of course!

with lots of addons it is perfect editor!

btw I tried Eclipse, it is very cool, but little bit slow under my Ubuntu.. Also I think there isn't feature of snippets like in gEdit, so that's also why I user gEdit

yea, and vim is also gr8 editor

I'm using Krusader and its internal editor - KrViewer. It has really nice feature to open/save files from remote file systems via sftp (as most of KDE apps has).

I like Eclipse (+PDT) even more but it runs really slow on Linux and existing sftp plugins are really weak.

I'm using Zend Studio. I used Eclipse in the past, but I thought it was a bit slow like Zer0x told (slow under Linux, but also kind of unstable under Windows). And since we use Zend Studio at my new job, I just switched to it.

Downside for "home" users is that it is not for free. So I don't think that Zend Studio would get more "support" for Symfony

I'm using eclipse with pdt, because it is much faster then zend under win, and not less stable than zend. Besides may be somebody know yaml editor plugin for eclipse?

Eclipse can run very nice if you have enough memory

Then in my opinion, eclipse isn't fast if you have to put 3GB of Ram in your system. It's the same thing like an athleet taking steroids, win the game and claiming he's the best

But again, I think that it is mostly subjective what IDE you use.

It is performing well, its just resources (memory) hungry.

I use notepad++ lots of plugins including compare, ftp.
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm
Also use winscp for more complex ftp stuff
http://winscp.net/eng/index.php
And finally Assembla for a free trac and svn account
http://www.assembla.com/

I love free stuff ;)~ ;-)~

I've used PHPed and Ecplipse, but there just way too complicated and bloated for my taste. They do have some great debugging tools though.

i beg to differ on that note

i got 2 gigs of ram and gave eclipse 1 gig of ram in parameters and it still drags on a quad core processor in ubuntu with no load on the machine?
explain that one

I switched to using this instead of textPad. Mostly because I can run notepad++ from my thumbdrive too.

I like notepad++ - it's a nice simple editor, but I prefer to use a full IDE, and right now my favorite is Komodo.

I will soon look at PHP Ed, as the Flash demos look pretty good:

http://www.nusphere.com/products/phped.htm

And don't forget we're looking forward to what Netbeans will offer by way of symfony support in their next major version.

Another solution is PHPEdit with its dedicated Symfony extension:
A presentation video is available from here:

a new version (2.1 rc) of eclipse PDT is out, i tried it and they finally fixed the /* @var $var Var */ hinting so i m definitly sticking to eclipse =)

The symfony support of PHPEdit seems the best of all IDE so far but not free ~

I use Aptana http://www.aptana.com for my symfony development, which has a PHP editor and a YAML editor if you install RadRails, among a lot of other features.

Since it's built on Eclipse, most plugins that work for Eclipse can be plugged into Aptana.
Currently Using

Symfony 1.4/Doctrine 1.2
MySQL 5.1

How is the state of netbeans these days? I was using it maybe 2 years ago, for C++ development, but due to java exceptions thrown all over the place I had to stop using it.

Another issue was slow loading of files, for a file to be parsed (for syntax highlighting) it took maybe 5 seconds even on a fast machine.

EDIT: On linux I use gedit. There are many options for customization (http://rubymm.blogspot.com/2007/08/make-gedit-behave-roughly -like-textmate.html)

Another promising editor to check out is at http://redcareditor.com/

i d say netbeans is better than eclipse PDT for the php side(auto completion...) but eclipse make up for it with its overal functionnality and customisation.

I've switched from Eclipse PDT to Netbeans. The function/method hinting appears more easily in the former (e.g. on ctrl-space inside a method parenthesis) and so in theory is much more friendly. (I should raise a feature request to get this in Netbeans!). But for large projects the auto-completion feature can freeze PDT, and sometimes it even needs to be restarted. They are working on this bug, but at the moment I find it nearly unusable.

It has special plug-in for Symfony development: autocomplete etc.

I swear on using PHP Storm for development.
You can start out-of-the-box, but also invest time to adjust and configure PHP Storm.
That way you can create the perfect environment to develop.

It also has a lot of 'add-ons' or 'plugins' to further tweak the editor.
