New topics about Symfony 2 should go here

New forum

Hi all

I've set up a new forum for discussion regarding the preview release of Symfony 2. This is fine for discussion between people trying the new approaches, but if you want the core devs to see your feedback, it would be better to use the user or dev mailing lists.

Not as much as they were. I think I am the only mod left, and I am not a Symfony 2 user. I will email the lead dev to see if we/he can do something about reinvigorating the forum community.

Meanwhile you can also try the users mailing list, or StackOverflow. If you are reposting something from here, it is usually a good idea to mention you are cross-posting. Best of luck getting the answers you need :)

Regarding the forum:
Many of the questions that are posted are not related to symfony's core, but with bundles available. Also, the bundles tend to be always the same (Sonata's several bundles, FOSUser, and a couple more).
My suggestion is to create subforuns/groups/whatever it's called for each specific bundle, inside the sumfony2 forum, allowing better serch results and organization of content.

Any thoughts on this?

Yeah... people should at least tag their questions accordingly. :|

I just took a look over the forum and I'd propose a complete overhaul now with Symfony2 being here. There should be a clean structure what is 2.x and what is the old 1.x. A seperate section for (common) open source bundles would fit there, too.

Cheers

Agree. The root structure is clearly planned for Symfony 1.x and then someone just added Symfony2 on top of it.
+1 for a restructuration

since there isn't yet any efficient way to receive support with symfony 2 I think the following proposal is a very good idea! - http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposa ... 4/symfony2 - A new Q&A site for symfony2

Hi all,

By popular request, I've had a re-organisation of the forums. The Symfony 2 discussion group (this one) becomes the new General Discussion forum, and there is now dedicated forums for Installation and Bundles for Symfony 2. See how you get on with that, and if other changes seem like a good idea over the next few weeks, feel free to suggest them.

Any chance of granting one or two of the more active posters moderator status? Be nice if someone could delete the spam in a timely fashion.

Hi all

Apologies to all; I've been tied up, and intended to sort this out earlier. Finally I have made @althaus a mod for these boards, so please welcome him along in his new role, and thanks to Matthias for volunteering :)

Incidentally, so everyone is aware - posts from new users are being held for moderation. This will make the board slightly slower for new users, but will help deal with the spam. Once you are established as a regular poster, your posts will be approved automatically.

Hi, I think I don't have to open a new thread for this...

I just wanted to ask whether it would be possible to add a BBcode tag for syntax highlighting to the forum? I think this would be a great improvement. Another possibility (which I'd prefer) is to integrate github's gist snippets. It would be as easy as replacing a tag like
Code: Select all
[gist]1583951[/gist]

with
Code: Select all
<script src="https://gist.github.com/1583951.js"></script>

If I remember correctly it is quite easy to add such a rule in phpBB.

What do you think?

Yeah... this would be really nice. I'll ask Jon and Fabien about this.

I'm not that deep into phpBB.

@blogsh - gist integration would be a great idea. If you can find a stable plugin for this, I should imagine Fabien would be happy to install it.

It's quite easy. You can define custom BBcode tags in phpBB: http://www.phpbb.com/support/documentat ... ng_bbcodes

The rule would be:
Code: Select all
[gist]{id}[gist]

The replacement would be:
Code: Select all
<script src="https://gist.github.com/{id}.js"></script>

Hi @all - I've just seen a large moderation queue, containing mainly spam, but quite a few legitimate old posts. Many apologies to anyone affected by this - I don't know whether there is a problem with moderation. I am no longer active here, but someone emailed me regarding their message being caught in the queue, so I've logged on to check.

@dreipunktnull - I've emailed @althaus just now. Are you the only remaining active mod? If so, drop me an email - thanks.

@halfer: There is typically a queue of 25 up to 50 posts with mainly spam when I check it in the morning. I am in fact the only remaining active mod so there can be a delay of some hours when I'm asleep ;-) .

I just saw another spam post from the same user whose spam posts I've been disapproving on three different occasions. Any chance we could just ban the users and their IPs after disapproving? We really do get a metric ton of spam and I think that would help a -lot-.

I don't think this would help a lot as most of the spammers are using dial-in connections with changing IPs. :(

How about a word blacklist of some kind? About 90% of these spam posts seem to refer to Louis Vuitton handbags. Most of them use automated post submitters, so another thing that might help would be adding hidden inputs with tokens onto the forums new thread/post form, a CAPTCHA for newly registered users with no approved posts, etc.

Add uggs and nfljerseys and many more. It's a cat-and-mouse-game. The CAPTCHA for new registrations is broken so another one for new posts (if there is such a mod) would be useless soon. We should try a service like Akismet or Mollom but that's something the forum admins have to install. Anyone?

How are they getting through the mail confirmation? Spammers tend to use the same mail host for all their accounts, so they can batch process it and curl get the links inside the mails, at least I guess that's close to what they do, I can't imagine them opening real mail accounts for every forum account. Any way we can ban them if they all use the same?
Also, would IP range banning work? Sometimes I've seen spammers all using the same class C or class B subnet.

Hi all,

it seems that the new Captcha is working well. What we now need to do is deactivate or delete all previously registered spam accounts. We could select all users having zero posts and registered before this Wednesday but I'm too chicken to do that :? Any other ideas?

Cheers
