install symfony in linux with xampp

Installation and environment issues, mainly on 1.x but there's some 2.x here too.

install symfony in linux with xampp

Well, i tried to install symfony to do the askeet calendar, but with no lucky. I'm using xampp under ubuntu, but when i tried to install symfony, PEAR refer to the php4 installed as local, not the php5 of xampp. Any idea ?

I saw a great tutorial of installing symfony with xampp but for windows: hPear

Something i cannot understand is why the framework couldĀ“t be installed just by decompressing it into a directory in the webserver as other frameworks. for example cakephp.

You can install symfony by decompressing the archive, no problem (read the installation documentation to have more information).

The reason we provide the PEAR install is:
- the ease of installation and upgrade;
- the independance of the framework and projects;
- to have the possibility to develop several projects with only one copy of the framework.
