Day 1-16 source code

by francois » Mon Jul 03, 2006 10:40 am

We'll soon publish it in the tutorial pages, but in the meantime, here is a zip containing the updated source code of the days 1 to 16.

Now, if you're blocked at one day, you can compare your code with the one of the day, and start over the next day with a working version!

Problem with Day 1 source code

by rickb » Sat Jul 07, 2007 12:10 am

Is the source code in the zip file out of date now, or have I missed a vital point somewhere?

When I follow the instructions for Askeet Day 1, I get something approximately working (although worryingly slightly different in the page that's displayed).

However, when I unzip askeet_day_1.zip and recursively diff its directory against my own, there is very little resemblance between that and my own code. Yet Day 1 is apparently all about running the symfony init-project and init-app tools - all I did was run those tools with no hand coding needed.

Is this difference due to me using the latest 1.0.5 version whereas the zip files correspond to an older version?

Rick

(oh and by the way, the unzipped version crashes and burns horribly for me due to a missing pear file or two.)

Yea, the Symfony core files and Askeet files provided in this thread contradict each other. The manuals is full of holes and bugs. Better not to even attempt this example.

I found that there is a SVN version as well - also different. So the three versions (the Askeet tutorial pages, the downloadable zips and the SVN repository) all differ.

Not ideal. :(~ :-(~

Just use CodeIgniter[Kohana]... much easier and doesn't try to reinvent every wheel.

CodeIgniter, from what I know about it, operates at a much lower level than symfony, which is why it is easier to learn. It is also stuck on PHP4 by design. I'm sure it is a good framework, but IMHO it doesn't have the power that symfony does. The inherent disadvantage with symfony, on the other hand, is the learning curve is much steeper.

yes, you can go http://www.symfony-project.org/askeet/1_0/here and read the steps to install askeet. In fact you install symfony(i recommend the pear installation) and then keep on throw the steps to built in askeet.
Good luck!
