Priority on Module Plugins

Postby layanto » Wed Oct 31, 2007 4:27 am

Just my humble opinion (but maybe there are others who think a like).
I very much like symfony and I believe that once v1.1 is out, symfony is a mature framework (in fact v1.0.x is already a mature framework). As such, I'm hoping that the symfony development team can put their efforts on the Module Plugins (e.g. sfSimpleBlog, sfGuardPlugin, sfSimpleCMSPlugin, sfSimpleForumPlugin, etc) to bring them to a mature state. This will ease the development of sites using symfony as all the basic building blocks are ready and mature. I believe that after v1.1 is out, symfony framework development can take the back seat for a little while (note: just for a little while) to give these Module Plugins a chance to catch up and mature. Once Module Plugins are mature, the symfony framework development can resume at full pace to v2.0, v3.0 ......

Please post reply on whether you agree or disagree with my view. I'm interested to know whether the core symfony developers agree or disagree. If there are a lot of you out there who agree with me, maybe the developers will be persuaded to agree ;)~ ;-)~.

Ultimately I'd MUCH rather see development continue as it is with non-core team members working on plugins and core team members focused on the development of the core of Symfony.

Anything that is non-core related within Symfony should begin to be pushed out of the core and made in plugins. So anything that, for example, isn't specifically driving a model, controller, or view logic behind the scenes.

Ultimately getting validation more in line with other MVC systems will be helpful, and once PHP 6 is released I'd like to see the core team devs really focusing on bringing the power that will likely be added with that release into Symfony.

It's a great start and as I use the system more and more I like what I see.

I think I second kmedlin on this one - I guess the work on the plugins could be done by the community, while the core team members can fully concentrate on keeping the core Symfony development on rails... If there's some time to do some extra stuff they could still update a couple of important plugins.

Guess that would be better than having to shift over priorities all the time and "loosing" track of both things everytime...

But anyway, I have no clue how the core team members see this, but we'll find out :D~ :-D~
